DrainCom is the

No. 1 Rated

choice for licensed and insured basement waterproofing services in Mississauga, Canada.

A sump pump is your basement’s most important active defence against flooding. Without one, groundwater and storm drainage collect under your slab and force their way in. With a properly installed sump pump system, that water is collected and discharged away from your foundation before it causes damage.

At DrainCom, we have been providing professional sump pump installation services across the GTA for over 20 years. Our licensed sump pump plumbers handle new system installs, replacements, dual pump setups, battery backups and emergency service.

We are not a general contractor who installs sump pumps on the side. Basement flood protection is our specialty. Every system we install is sized correctly for the property, plumbed to Ontario Building Code and fully tested before we leave.

What Homeowners Say About DrainCom

Sump Pump Installation Services We Cover

Sump Pump Installation

New Sump Pump Installation

If your home does not have a sump pump, a new installation includes excavating the sump pit at the lowest point of your basement floor, installing the pump unit, setting the float switch and running the discharge line to a safe exterior exit point.

We size every pump correctly for your property – matching horsepower (HP) and gallons-per-hour (GPH) capacity to your actual water load. An undersized pump burns out under heavy demand. An oversized one short-cycles and wears prematurely. We get the specification right the first time.

Sump Pump Replacement Service

Submersible pumps last 10 to 15 years. Pedestal units last 15 to 25 years with regular maintenance. If your pump is old, running constantly, grinding or cycling abnormally, or if it failed during the last storm, it is time for a replacement.

We carry quality replacement units on our service trucks and complete most sump pump replacements in a single visit.

Battery Backup Sump Pump Installation

A standard sump pump runs on AC power. During a heavy Ontario storm, power outages are common – exactly when you need flood protection most. A battery backup unit activates automatically when the primary pump fails or power is cut.

We install DC-powered backup pumps alongside your primary unit, sized to handle your water load during an outage. A sump alarm is included so you know when the backup has activated. This is one of the most valuable upgrades any homeowner can make.

Dual Sump Pump Installation

A dual sump pump system places two independent pumps in the same pit with separate float switches set at different trigger heights. If the primary pump is overwhelmed by volume or fails mechanically, the backup activates automatically.

Dual systems are recommended for homes in lower-lying areas near Credit River, lakefront communities and any property with a history of basement flooding.

Sump Pump System Installation with Weeping Tile

A sump pump is only as effective as the drainage system feeding it. We install complete systems that integrate with a perimeter interior drainage network – weeping tile pipe, gravel bedding and Delta MS membrane all routed to the sump pit.

A pump sitting in an isolated pit only removes water flowing in by gravity. A full system installation captures groundwater building pressure under the slab — the correct approach for lasting flood protection.

Sump Pump Plumbing and Discharge Line Installation

The discharge line carries water from the pump to outside your home. It must be correctly sized for the pump’s GPH output, sloped properly, fitted with a check valve to prevent backflow and terminated well away from the foundation.

Improper sump pump plumbing is one of the most common installation errors we correct in homes. We replumb discharge lines to Ontario Building Code on every job.

Emergency Sump Pump Installation

A pump failure during a storm is an emergency. Water rises fast once the pump stops. We dispatch quickly across, remove standing water and install a working replacement unit the same day.

After stabilizing the situation, we assess whether additional drainage work is needed to prevent a repeat event. Emergency response is the first step – a permanent fix is always the goal.

Sump Pump Repair

Not every failing pump needs full replacement. Common on-site repairs include:

  • Clogs and debris buildup – clearing intake screens and pit sediment to restore proper flow
  • Float switch failure – the most frequent cause of pump inactivity at the worst possible time
  • Strange sounds – grinding, rattling or humming usually points to a mechanical issue we can locate and fix on-site
  • Damaged impeller – when the pump runs but water does not move, the impeller is usually the cause

We carry common replacement parts on every service truck. We repair before recommending replacement – you only replace when it is genuinely the right call.

Commercial Sump Pump Installation

Restaurants, office buildings, retail units and industrial spaces need pump systems sized for larger volumes and longer run cycles. We assess flow rate, head pressure, pit dimensions and discharge requirements before specifying any commercial unit.

We supply and install high-capacity submersible pumps for commercial basement and underground parking applications.

Sump Pump Maintenance Service

Annual sump pump maintenance is the most cost-effective way to avoid emergency replacements. Our service includes float switch testing, pit and intake cleaning, check valve inspection, discharge line check, full pump cycle test and battery backup charge verification.

Submersible vs. Pedestal Sump Pump: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Submersible Sump Pump Pedestal Sump Pump
Sits inside the pit, submerged in water Motor sits above the pit on a pedestal
Quieter – motor insulated by water Louder – motor exposed above pit
Higher HP options; handles large volumes Good for narrow pits with limited diameter
Recommended for most Mississauga and Toronto homes Easier motor access for servicing
Lifespan: 10 – 15 years with maintenance Lifespan: 15 – 25 years in ideal conditions

For most residential sump pump installations, we recommend a submersible unit. They run quieter, handle higher water volumes and fit below the pit cover. We specify the correct HP and GPH rating for your basement during the free inspection.

What Is a Sump Pump and Why Do Homes Need One?

A sump pump is an electric pump installed in a sump pit at the lowest point of your basement floor. As groundwater collects in the pit, a float switch activates the pump. It pushes water through a discharge line to the exterior, safely away from the foundation.

Some local areas sit on clay-dense soil with a high water table in many areas, particularly near the Credit River and Lakeshore corridor. Some older housing stock – especially in Etobicoke, Scarborough and lower-lying North York neighbourhoods – faces combined sewer surcharge and groundwater pressure during heavy storm events.

Without a functioning sump pump, hydrostatic pressure builds under the basement slab and forces water up through cracks, floor joints and weeping tile connections. A properly installed sump pump system is your last line of active defence against this.

Signs You Need a New Sump Pump Installation or Replacement

Call a local sump pump installer if you notice any of the following in your home:

  • Your home does not have a sump pump and you have had basement moisture or flooding
  • Your existing pump is more than 10 years old and has not been serviced recently
  • The pump runs continuously, short-cycles or makes grinding, rattling or humming noises
  • The float switch is stuck – pump does not activate when water rises in the pit
  • Standing water in the pit with the pump not running
  • The pump ran during the last storm but the basement still flooded – likely undersized for the water load
  • You have a primary pump but no battery backup and your area experienced a power outage during a storm
  • You are finishing your basement and want a properly installed sump system before walls go up
  • You are applying for city flood prevention rebates and need a licensed, documented installation

Not sure if your pump is working correctly? We test it during the free inspection at no charge.

How We Install a Sump Pump

Free inspection and site assessment

We assess the basement, check existing pit condition, measure the floor area and confirm the discharge exit point. We review the local water table and drainage conditions for your specific area.

Pump sizing

We calculate the correct HP and GPH rating based on basement size, local water table level and weeping tile capacity. A correctly sized pump protects more reliably and lasts longer.

Sump pit installation (if new)

We core or break the concrete floor at the correct location, excavate the pit to proper depth, install a high-density polyethylene liner and backfill with clear gravel for drainage.

Pump installation

The unit is set in the pit and the float switch is installed and calibrated at correct activation and shutoff water levels. On dual systems, both switches are set at offset heights.

Check valve installation

A check valve is fitted on the discharge line above the pump. This stops discharged water from flowing back into the pit when the pump shuts off, preventing false recycling and premature motor wear.

Discharge line plumbing

We run a PVC discharge line through the basement wall to the exterior, correctly sloped, terminated at a splash pad minimum 6 feet from the foundation per Ontario Building Code.

Electrical connection

The pump is connected to a dedicated GFCI-protected outlet rated for the pump load. Battery backup systems are wired to their own charging unit

Full system test

We fill the pit with water and run a complete activation cycle - float switch response, discharge flow, check valve function and backup activation all confirmed before we leave.

Sump alarm installation

A water alarm sensor is placed in the pit above the normal activation level. If the pump fails and water rises past the sensor, an audible alarm activates immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

A replacement unit with no pit work runs $900 to $1,200 installed. A full new system with pit, plumbing and discharge line is $2,200 to $3,500 for most residential homes. A dual system with battery backup runs $3,500 to $5,500+. Commercial installations are priced by flow rate. We provide a written quote after a free inspection – no estimates over the phone.

Peel Region homeowners can receive up to $6,000 for sump pump installation alone, and up to $7,500 total when combined with a backwater valve and weeping tile capping. We manage the full application – documentation, certification and submission – on your behalf.

In most cases, sump pump installation does not require a building permit on its own. If the installation is part of a larger drainage or waterproofing project, permits may apply. We assess this during the inspection and obtain all required documentation. All our work meets Ontario Building Code and regional plumbing standards.

A straight replacement with no pit work takes two to four hours. A full new system installation with pit excavation and plumbing takes four to eight hours. Dual pump systems take a full day. We confirm the exact timeline before starting any work.

A dual system uses two independent pumps in the same pit with float switches set at different heights. The backup activates if the primary is overwhelmed or fails. Recommended for flood-zone properties, finished basements where water damage would be severe and any home where power outages during storms are a known risk.

Submersible pumps typically last 10 to 15 years. Pedestal pumps can last 15 to 25 years with annual maintenance. Pumps running frequently due to high groundwater wear out faster. If your pump is over 10 years old, we assess it honestly during the inspection and tell you whether repair or replacement is the right call.

Yes. All our sump pumps come with a reliable warranty. We take pride in our work, no exceptions.

In most cases, we can be there within a day. When your basement is at risk, speed matters, and we don’t keep you waiting.

Absolutely. Whether it is loud, slow, or even dead, we will check it out and let you know whether it is worth repairing. Otherwise, we will put in a new one, and quickly.

Yes, and we recommend them. A sump pump without backup during a power outage is a risk. We install full systems that keep protecting your basement even when the lights go out.

We excavate the pit, lay the basin and pump, lay the discharge, and test it all before we go. The installation of a sump pump in basement areas must be clean, code-compliant, and done the first time correctly. That’s our standard.

When you have had water in your basement, even once, it’s worth looking into. A sump pump will save your house when the next storm strikes. We install sump pump systems from start to finish and ensure everything functions as it should, from the pit to the pipe.
